Afghan Woman Gives Birth To Quintuplets

The babies -- all male -- are in stable condition but are underweight.

Doctors say a 35-year-old woman has given birth to quintuplets in Afghanistan's northern Samangan Province.

Noor Mohammad Faiz, the chief of the regional hospital in the neighborning Balkh Province, told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan on August 5 that the mother, Rezagul, and the newborns -- who are all male -- are in stable condition but are underweight, as is common with babies of multiple births.

The doctor said the five were born in the Hazrat Sultan district hospital in Samangan during the weekend but were transferred to the Balkh regional hospital to receive better care.

Rezagul, a housewife who goes by one name only, has two other children, a girl and a boy.
