Militants Attack Hospital In Southern Afghanistan

Two militants who attacked a hospital in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar have been killed by Afghan security forces.

Samim Khpalwak, a spokesman for the provincial governor of Kandahar, said the target for the attack was the deputy governor, who was visiting the Kandahar Mirwais Hospital, a large regional facility that provides medical services to war victims, including members of the army and police.

One Afghan security officer was wounded in the clashes.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, although Taliban militants have increased attacks against government forces in the country's restive south.

Taliban militants are fighting government forces in the opium-producing province of Helmand and have threatened to overrun the provincial capital of Uruzgan Province, Tarin Kowt.
