Suicide Attack Kills Afghan Soldiers, Civilians

Afghan officials say at least seven people were killed in the southern Helmand Province when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive-laden vehicle near an army base.

A spokesman for the Helmand provincial police, Farid Ahmad Obaid, said the target was a military convoy in the Sangin District.

At least seven people were wounded in the attack according to police and medical officials.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

Helmand, known as a large poppy-growing area, has been one of the most restive regions in Afghanistan for years.

The army launched an offensive against Taliban strongholds in Helmand last month.
