A U.S. investigation of a Taliban attack at a base in Afghanistan that killed two marines last year has found that officers had “consistent indicators” of Taliban interest in attacking the facility.
The conclusions of the investigation by the U.S. Central Command led the U.S. Marines on October 1 to announce that two generals had been forced to retire early due to shortcomings in their leadership at Camp Bastion.
Central Command’s report, released on October 1, said the base’s intelligence officer reported that indications of possible Taliban threats were “high.”
A group of 15 Taliban militants entered the base in Helmand Province on September 14 2012 and carried out an assault that killed two marines, wounded at least eight personnel, and destroyed six Marine fighter jets worth millions of dollars.
