Suicide Bomber Attacks Italian Base In Western Afghanistan

A wounded Italian soldier is helped after a blast near an Italian base in Herat.

A suicide bomber blew up his explosives-packed car at the gates of an Italian military base in Afghanistan's western city of Herat today, while a second bomb blast hit a busy intersection in the center of the city.

Three civilians and a policeman were reportedly killed and more than 20 injured in the second attack.

Italian Defense Minister Ignazio La Russa said five Italian soldiers were wounded, one of them seriously, in the attack on the military compound, where an Italian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team of military and civilians workers is based.

Herat, western Afghanistan's largest city, is one of seven areas scheduled to be handed over to Afghan security forces in July as the first step toward handing over responsibility for security nationwide to Afghan forces by 2014.

In southern Afghanistan today, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force said a man wearing an Afghan Army uniform shot and killed an ISAF soldier.

It was not immediately clear whether the shooter was an Afghan soldier or a militant wearing a military uniform, nor whether he was detained or fled.
