French National, Moroccan Detained Fighting Alongside Taliban

KABUL -- The Afghan Defense Ministry says Afghan forces have captured a French national and a Moroccan who were fighting alongside the Taliban in the south of the country.

In a statement sent to RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan, the ministry said Afghan Army special commandos took part in the May 9 night operation in the village of Ghazi in Zabul Province.

It said five insurgents, including two Pakistanis, were killed, but that there were no casualties among Afghan forces.

The ministry said "a considerable amount" of weapons and ammunition was also discovered and destroyed on site.

It gave no other details of the operation.
