WATCH: Ahmadinejad Targeted With Shoe

Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad has been welcomed by Egypt's president but warned against interfering with Sunnis by Egypt’s top Sunni cleric.

Ahmadinejad and representatives from more than 50 other states are attending the Cairo summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which began on February 6.

Ahmadinejad on February 5 became the first president of Shi’ite-led Iran to visit Egypt for more than 30 years, since ties were severed after Egypt reached a peace deal with Iran’s rival Israel.

Ahmadinejad was welcomed by Islamist-backed President Muhammad Morsi.

But he was warned at a later meeting with Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb that Iran should not interfere in Sunni-led states or harass Iranian Sunnis.

A protester -- reportedly a Syrian -- also tried to hit Ahmadinejad with a shoe outside a mosque but was restrained by police.
