Kyrgyz Ex-President's Former Son-In-Law Released In Moscow

BISHKEK -- A former son-in-law of former Kyrgyz President Askar Akaev has been released from custody in Russia.

Adil Toighanbaev was detained at Interpol’s request on February 9 at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow as he was on his way to Western Europe.

Toighanbaev's lawyer, Ikramidin Aitkulov, told RFE/RL on February 11 that his client has not been extradited to Kyrgyzstan because he is a Kazakh citizen.

Toighanbaev, a Kazakh national, is the former husband of Akaev's daughter Bermet Akaeva.

He is wanted in Kyrgyzstan for alleged tax evasion and financial fraud.

Last summer, authorities in Kazakhstan detained Toighanbaev at Interpol's request but refused to extradite him to Kyrgyzstan, saying they do not extradite Kazakh citizens to foreign countries.

Aitkulov says Russian authorities will send all documents related to Toighanbaev to his native Kazakhstan.
