Protesters Disrupt French Minister's Visit To Gaza

Palestinian protesters today disrupted French Foreign Minister Michele Alliot-Marie's visit to the Gaza Strip, mobbing her car as it arrived in the territory ruled by the Islamist militant group Hamas.

Dozens of protesters first tried to block Alliot-Marie's car from passing through the Erez crossing from Israel, then gathered outside a UN office which was her first stop in the territory and followed her to a nearby hospital. They pelted her car with eggs.

The protesters were angry at comments she made in Israel on January 20 in which she voiced support for an Israeli soldier held by Hamas but did not mention the plight of Palestinians held in Israeli jails.
