Armenian Soldier Reported Killed On Azerbaijani Border

YEREVAN -- An Armenian soldier has reportedly been shot dead along the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan's Naxcivan Autonomous Republic.

The Armenian Defense Ministry's press service told RFE/RL that another Armenian soldier was wounded by Azerbaijani snipers on August 23.

Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry denied the Armenian statement, calling it "disinformation."

The Azerbaijani side says it has data confirming that an Armenian soldier was killed and several others were injured in a scuffle inside an Armenian military unit.

The two countries have been locked in a conflict over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which local Armenian separatists, backed by Yerevan, seized from Azerbaijan during a devastating war in the 1990s.

Diplomatic efforts to settle the conflict since then have brought no results, and shootings on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border have been common.
