Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian visited Azerbaijan’s breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh on May 9 to mark Victory Day on May 9.

Sarkisian’s press services said the Armenian president would take part in events devoted to the 69th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II and the 22nd anniversary of Armenian troops gaining control over the city of Shusha in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Azerbaijan and Armenia remain locked in hostilities over disputed Nagorno-Karabakh, the Azerbaijani territory that was seized by Armenian-backed separatists during a war in the early 1990s.

Nagorno-Karabakh's independence has not been recognized by any country.
