Nobel Laureate Suu Kyi To Run In Myanmar By-Election

Aung San Suu Kyi speaks at a meeting inside the National League For Democracy party headquarters in Yangon on November 18.

Aung San Suu Kyi's party says the Myanmar pro-democracy leader intends to run in an upcoming by-election.

It will be the first time the Nobel Peace Prize laureate has competed in an election since 1990, when her landslide electoral victory was voided by the country's ruling generals, who went on to suppress the party for two decades.

The announcement came just days after Suu Kyi's National League For Democracy party on November 18 decided to end its boycott of the country's political system.

Suu Kyi has spent most of the last 20 years in detention before her release from house arrest one year ago.

The country's military rulers in March handed power to a nominally civilian administration.

U.S. President Barack Obama has said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton plans to visit Myanmar in early December to encourage signs of reform in the southeast Asian country.

Clinton will become the highest-ranking American official to visit the former British colony since the 1962 military coup.
