Belarus Foreign Minister Meets With EU, NATO Officials In Brussels

Belarusian Foreign Minister Uladzimer Makey has discussed cooperation with EU and NATO officials in the latest sign of warming relations between Minsk and the West.

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry says that during Makey's December 13-14 visit to Brussels, he held talks with NATO Deputy Secretary-General Alexander Vershbow, EU Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn, and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.

"Topical issues regarding cooperation between Belarus, the European Union, and NATO were discussed at the meetings," the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said on December 14.

In late October, the EU Council suspended until February 29 its sanctions against 170 Belarusian officials and three companies it had introduced several years ago in the wake of a crackdown against democratic and civil institutions in Belarus.
