Belgian police have detained six people allegedly planning an attack on the capital city during its official New Year's festivities, which have been canceled.
The arrests bring to eight the number of people being held on suspicion of involvement in the scheme.
The detentions came as police conducted searches at six locations in Brussels and one just outside the city.
Several computers, mobile phones, and equipment for guns that shoot nonlethal plastic pellets, called airsoft, were seized in the raids.
Two Muslim Belgians were arrested earlier this week on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack.
Brussels Mayor Yvan Mayeur said it was "better not to take risks" in announcing the cancelation of the city's New Year's activities.
Officials in Paris have also canceled all official New Year's festivities.
More than 100,000 police are on duty over New Year's in France.
The French capital is still reeling from the November 13 attacks by Islamic extremists that killed 130 people at different sites in the city.
The ringleader of the Paris attackers, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, grew up in a poor district of Brussels.
