Belgian Police Arrest 12 Suspected Of Planning Terror Attacks

Belgian security forces have arrested 12 people accused of planning new terrorist attack after overnight home searches around the country.

The Belgian prosecutor's office said in a June 18 statement that 40 people had been detained for questioning and that 12 were arrested.

Many European countries are on high alert as the Euro 2016 soccer championship is being held in neighboring France.

The Belgian public broadcaster VTM said some of those arrested were suspected of planning an attack in Brussels this weekend.

In March, Islamist suicide bombers killed 32 people in the Belgian capital's airport and two subway stations.

That followed coordinated attacks in Paris in November 2015 by radical Islamists that killed 130 people.

Several of those who carried out the Paris attacks were based in Belgium.
