Berlin Film Festival Opens

The 66th Berlin International Film Festival has kicked off in the German capital.

The Berlinale, one of the top three cinema showcases in Europe along with Cannes and Venice, opened on February 11 with a screening of the Coen brothers' comedy Hail, Caesar! starring George Clooney.

Eighteen movies are in contention for the Golden and Silver Bears, including Death In Sarajevo by Bosnian director Danis Tanovic.

The film, based on a play of French writer Bernard-Henri Levy, is about the existential fears, anxieties and moral dilemmas that plague modern European society.

Also competing is Iranian writer-director Mani Haghighi’s new movie A Dragon Arrives!

The film follows three young men who are put in danger by their unauthorized investigation into the legend of a seismological phenomenon in an ancient graveyard.

Festival Director Dieter Kosslick said many movies at the 11-day event address "the search for happiness" and "migration in the world in very varying forms."
