Bishkek Ex-Mayor Charged With Corruption

Former Mayor of Bishkek Nariman Tuleev

BISHKEK – A court in Kyrgyzstan has brought charges of corruption against Bishkek's former mayor, Nariman Tuleev.

Prosecutors said on June 25 that Tuleev was engaged in bribery that cost the state $1.4 million while overseeing the purchase of buses from China that were surplus to requirements.

The court also ordered Tuleev – who is now a member of parliament -- be kept in custody for two months.

Tyuleyev served as Bishkek mayor under former President Kurmanbek Bakiev who was ousted by popular uprising in 2010.

RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reported that some 100 people gathered in front of the court building in Bishkek, but it wasn't immediately clear whether they were Tuleev's supporters or opponents.
