Bosnian Olympic Flag Carrier Choice Stirs Controversy

Zana Novakovic

Controversy has erupted in Bosnia-Herzegovina over who will carry the country's flag at the opening of the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, on February 7.

But the president of Bosnia's Olympic Committee, Sinisa Kisic, says there's no plan to change the decision.

The committee has selected Zana Novakovic, from Republika Srpska, to carry the flag, as based on her individual performance in women's skiing.

According to the committee, her results were better than the results of all other Bosnian winter-sport athletes.

But some critics say male skier Igor Laikert, from the Muslim-Croat Federation, had stronger results and should have been selected.

Bosnia-Herzegovina was divided into two political entities -- Republika Srpska and the Muslim-Croat Federation -- in the settlement of the 1992-95 Bosnian War.
