A U.S. federal judge has formally sentenced Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death.
At the June 24 court hearing, Tsarnaev apologized to his victims, saying, "I am sorry for the lives I have taken, for the suffering that I have caused you, for the damage I have done, irreparable damage."
The 21-year-old former student with roots in Russia's North Caucasus kept silent throughout his trial, which ended with the jury sentencing him to death on May 15.
The April 15, 2013, double bombings at the Boston Marathon were one of the worst assaults on American soil since the September 11, 2001, attacks.
Carried out by Tsarnaev and his late older brother Tamerlan, the bombs killed three people and wounded 264 others, including 17 who lost limbs, near the finish line.
