Two friends of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev have been sentenced to multiyear prison terms for obstruction and helping to hide evidence in the case.

Azamat Tazhayakov -- a Kazakh citizen who came to the United States to attend university -- was sentenced on June 5 to 3 1/2 years in jail for helping remove Tsarnaev's backpack from his dorm room before police could search it.

The backpack reportedly was filled with fireworks that could have been used as evidence of bomb-making activities.

Tazhayakov cried as he apologized in court to the people of Boston and his family for his actions.

He also condemned the attack at the marathon by Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan, and said the tragic event that killed three people and injured hundreds of others made him sick.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev and a police officer were killed in the aftermath of the bombing.

Tazhayakov, who has already been jailed for more than two years, helped remove Tsarnaev's backpack from his dorm room.

Another friend of Tsarnaev, Robel Phillipos, was sentenced to three years in prison for lying to the FBI about being in Tsarnaev's university dorm room after the 2013 attacks..
