Car Bomb Strikes In Northern Afghanistan

A car bomb attack in northern Afghanistan has killed one person and wounded two more.

Police in Jawzjan Province said the explosion occurred August 24 in the town of Shibirghan.

The vehicle was carrying beans when the bomb -- hidden in one of the sacks -- detonated.

Shibirghan has largely been peaceful though insurgents have extended their presence to the north during this summer's fighting season.

Jawzjan is the home province of Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum, a former warlord.

Dostum, whose base is in Shibirghan, has recently taken his personal militia to fight the Taliban and other insurgents across the northern provinces.
