Chinese Spacecraft Lands On Moon

China has landed a spacecraft carrying its first robotic rover on the moon.

The "Chang'e 3" lander is named after a mythical Chinese goddess of the moon.

With the landing, China becomes the third country to carry out a lunar soft landing, after the United States and the Soviet Union.

The last such landing on the moon occurred in 1976, 37 years ago.

After the landing, the Yutu, or Jade Rabbit, rover is planned to separate from the lander and begin a three-month study of the moon's surface.

The "Chang'e 3" mission blasted off from Earth on December 2.

According to Chinese space scientists, the mission aims at testing new technologies and gather scientific data.
