Chinese Prime Minister Visits Train Crash Site, Vows Thorough Investigation

A bullet train passes the viaduct from which carriages fell in the crash near Wenzhou, east Zhejiang Province, on July 25.

Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has visited the site of a deadly train crash and vowed a thorough and transparent investigation of the accident.

A high-speed train rammed into a stalled train near the eastern city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang province on July 23, killing 39 people and injuring nearly 200.

The accident sparked widespread public anger and doubts about authorities' ambitious plans to expand a burgeoning high-speed rail network.

The Railway Ministry says it is still investigating the cause of the crash, but officials have blamed faulty signal equipment.

In a rare admission of responsibility for the disaster, the research institute which designed the equipment issued a letter of apologies to the families of the victims and the injured passengers.
