Local officials in Russia's North Caucasus region of Daghestan say that a gunman has killed one person in an attack near the historic Naryn-Kala fortress in Derbent.

A representative of the Daghestani Health Ministry press service told the Interfax news agency on December 30 that ten other people were wounded in the attack, with four in serious condition.

There was no immediate indication of who was behind the deadly assault.

Daghestan has become the epicenter of violence for militants seeking to establish an Islamic state in the North Caucasus.

Human rights groups say violence in the predominantly Muslim region is fueled by a combination of religion along with anger at corruption and strong arm tactics by local leaders.
