Gunmen Kill Four Policemen In Daghestan

One of the suspects in the killing of four police officers in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Daghestan has been shot dead.

Daghestani police officials say the suspect refused to surrender and opened fire on police after he was located on July 15.

Russia's Investigative Committee said the policemen were shot dead on July 14 when unidentified gunmen opened fire on their car.

The police officers were on their way back from investigating a theft in the village of Burshi, some 100 kilometers southwest of Daghestan's capital, Makhachkala, when their car was attacked by at least two gunmen.

The police officers died at the scene.

Daghestan, an ethnically mixed, mostly Muslim region between Chechnya and the Caspian Sea, has become the most violence-plagued province in Russia's volatile North Caucasus in recent years.

Militants attack police, moderate Muslims, and local officials almost daily, saying they are fighting to create an Islamic state in southern Russia.
