Earthquakes Shake Almaty Region

A series of earthquakes has shaken the region around Kazakhstan's largest city, Almaty.

The country's Education and Science Ministry reported that the first quake, with a magnitude of 6.6, hit a mountainous region 225 kilometers southeast of the city late on January 28.

A series of aftershocks followed.

The earthquakes caused apartment buildings in Almaty to sway and many nervous residents spent the night sleeping outside.

Small tremors were felt in neighboring Kyrgyzstan.

It is not clear if the earthquake caused any deaths, injuries, or serious damage.
