A magnitude 5.9 earthquake has rocked the U.S. East Coast.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake on August 23 centered in the state of Virginia and was felt as far north as New York.

Federal officials say two nuclear reactors in Virginia were automatically shut down by safety systems around the time of the quake.

The Pentagon and U.S. Capitol Building in Washington were evacuated, as were courthouses in New York City.

The earthquake sent Washington office workers running into the streets. There were reports of some structural damage to buildings but no reports of serious injuries.
