Egypt Court Orders Retrial In Mubarak Embezzlement Case

An Egyptian court has overturned former President Hosni Mubarak's embezzlement conviction and ordered a retrial in the only case keeping him behind bars.

The 86-year-old was sentenced to three years in prison in May after being found guilty of stealing millions of dollars in public funds for his personal use.

But the Court of Cassation ruled on January 13 that legal procedures were not followed properly.

Reports say the decision on whether to free Mubarak pending a new trial must be made by prosecutors or the trial court.

Mubarak has been serving his sentence in a military hospital in Cairo.

In November, a court dropped charges against him for conspiring to kill hundreds of protesters during the 2011 uprising that removed him from power, and cleared him in two graft cases.

Mubarak's sons Gamal and Alaa, who were jailed for four years in the case, will also be retried.
