The retrial of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak for alleged complicity in the killing of protesters in 2011 began in Cairo on May 11 and was subsequently adjourned until June 8.
State media reported that some 3,000 security officers were deployed at an improvised court at the police academy on the outskirts of Cairo.
Mubarak and his then-Interior Minister Habib al-Adli were convicted and handed life sentences in June.
But in January, Egypt's highest court accepted their appeals and ordered a retrial.
Mubarak was ousted in February 2011 after an 18-day uprising.
More than 840 people were killed in the revolt.
The 85-year-old Mubarak is currently being held at a hospital at Tora prison in southern Cairo.
Also standing retrial are Mubarak's sons, Alaa and Gamal, for corruption charges.
