Egypt's Former First Lady Pledges To Turn Over Assets To State

Suzanne Mubarak

The wife of deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has pledged to turn over assets to the state, a move designed to settle the corruption allegations against her.

Mubarak and his wife, Suzanne, are accused of acquiring billions of dollars during Mubarak's 30 years in power.

The former president is also accused of involvement in the killings of antigovernment protesters.

Mubarak, 83, and his wife, 70, are both under detention in hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Both reportedly suffered heart attacks after prosecutors moved to detain them.

Officials say Suzanne Mubarak has pledged to turn over to the state $3 million and a villa in a Cairo suburb.

Under Egyptian law, those accused of making illegal gains could settle with the state by returning their money.
