EgyptAir Flight Wreckage Located In Deep Mediterranean Waters

Wreckage of an EgyptAir flight that crashed in the Mediterranean last month killing all 66 people on board has been found in "several main locations," the Egyptian-led investigation committee said on June 15.

The wreckage of flight MS804, which was en route to Cairo from Paris, was pinpointed by a seabed search vessel. Before locating the wreckage in waters up to 3,000 meters deep, search and rescue teams had recovered only small pieces of debris and body parts.

The reasons for the crash some 290 kilometers north of the Egyptian coast remain unknown, but Egyptian authorities have said a terrorist attack is more likely than a mechanical failure.

The investigation committee confirmed reports from Greek authorities that the plane swerved to the left and then spun around rightwards in a circle immediately before crashing.

Leaked flight data indicated a sensor detected smoke in a lavatory and a fault in two of the plane's cockpit windows in the final moments of the flight.

The discovery of the wreckage comes two weeks after a French navy vessel detected signals from one of the plane's black boxes. Its signal is expected to continue only through June 24.
