Egypt's election commission says official results from last weekend's presidential election runoff will be announced on June 24.

Victory has been claimed by both Muhammad Morsi, the candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood, and by Ahmed Shafiq, the last prime minister of ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

The results initially were to be announced by June 21 but have been delayed to examine appeals from both candidates.

Thousands of Egyptians have massed on Tahrir Square in Cairo while the country awaits the announcement.

Demonstrators on Tahrir Square are protesting against the ruling military council, which last week gave itself sweeping legislative and executive powers after dissolving the Islamist-dominated parliament.

The ruling military body, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, has rejected their demands.
