Eighteen Dead After Iraq Kidnapping

Reports from Iraq say police have uncovered the bodies of 18 people who had been abducted from their homes.

Security and medical officials said the corpses were found on November 29 abandoned in Meshahda, some 30 kilometers north of Baghdad.

They all had gunshots to the head.

Reports said the kidnappers, wearing military uniform and travelling in what appeared to be army vehicles, told the victims' families that they were suspects in a variety of investigations and had to be taken away for questioning.

The bodies were found hours later.

Earlier this week, police found 13 bodies in areas around Baghdad.

A spike in attacks in Iraq has raised fears about a return of the sectarian bloodshed that pushed the country to the brink of civil war in 2006-2007.
