Police in Romania are investigating anti-Semitic graffiti that was painted on the birthplace of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel in the northwestern town of Sighetu Marmatiei.
Police launched the probe on August 4 after the graffiti appeared during the previous night.
Among other comments, the graffiti said Wiesel was "in hell with Hitler."
Wiesel's family home is a protected monument in Romania.
Wiesel and his family were among some 14,000 Romanian Jews who were deported from the town to the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz in May 1944.
His mother and younger sister died there, while he and two older sisters survived.
Wiesel wrote over 40 books, most of them nonfiction works about the Holocaust. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his work against violence, repression, and racism.
He died in 2016.
