Gunman Killed After Estonian Ministry Shooting

A man fired shots and set off a smoke bomb today at the Defense Ministry in Estonia's capital, Tallinn, before being shot dead by police.

The prosecutor's office said in a statement that a man with a gun broke into the ministry building in the center of Tallinn.

He threw a smoke bomb inside the building and took two hostages, who were later freed.

A ministry spokesman said the man was shot dead during the police operation.

Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip identified the gunman as Karen Drambjan, born in Armenia in 1954 who took Estonian citizenship in 1993.

Ansip said the motive of Drambjan's actions was unclear but he added he appeared to have been inspired by the killings in Norway in July.
