EU Names Envoy To Caucasus

The EU has nominated Herbert Salber, a German diplomat, as the EU’s special envoy to Southern Caucasus, with special responsibility for monitoring the implementation of the deal that ended Russia's 2008 invasion of Georgia.

Salber's nomination was proposed by the EU's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and endorsed by EU member states. His appointment still needs to be formally approved by the European Council.

Following a high-level career as a German diplomat, which included postings in Belgrade, Vienna and Moscow, Salber served amongst others as head of the OSCE Center in Almaty, Kazakhstan as well as Director of the OSCE's Conflict Prevention Center.

Announcing Salber's appointment, Ashton said "his long-standing expertise and knowledge are significant assets for the EU."
