NATO and the European Union have decided to further boost their cooperation during a meeting of the alliance’s foreign ministers in Brussels.

"We are taking cooperation between NATO and the EU to a new level," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on December 5 at a joint press conference with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.

Stoltenberg said NATO and the EU agreed to work together on improving military mobility within Europe, strengthening the exchange of information in the fight against terrorism, and promoting "women’s role in peace and security."

Mogherini said that a recent decision to strengthen defense and security on the EU-level was meant to complement NATO and bolster EU capabilities for the benefit of the alliance, as well.

On the second day of the NATO meeting, discussions were expected to include the possible enlargement of the alliance to include Macedonia, Georgia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
