A top European Union official says the 28-country bloc will disburse aid to flood-ravaged Serbia “swiftly” but that it is waiting for Belgrade to submit a damage report before it can sign off the assistance.
“Now it’s up to the authorities of [Serbia] to present the assessment of damage, and the application will be processed swiftly,” European Commission President José Manuel Barroso told reporters following a May 27 meeting of EU heads-of-state in Brussels.
Barroso said the EU would offer the aid package to Serbia, which is not an EU member, from the European Union Solidarity Fund.
The leaders of the EU countries discussed the “devastating floods in the Balkans” that have forced thousands of people to flee their homes and killed dozens of people Bosnia and Herzegovina, and more than a dozen in Serbia.
