European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton met with Serbia's new prime minister on April 28 in Belgrade and pledged EU support for the Balkan nation in its attempts to overhaul its economy.

Ashton told Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic that the EU is "determined to help and support Serbia in its efforts to ensure a strong economic path for its people."

Vucic, who took office on April 27, said Serbia intends to implement economic reforms that pave the way for his country to join the EU in 2020.

Vucic said his country would initiate reforms such as cutting some 800,000 jobs in the state sector in order for Serbia to qualify for World Bank loans.

Vucic told Ashton, "We are not poor people seeking charity, we need support for true reforms."
