Five Police Officers Killed In Iraqi Attack

Five Iraqi police officers have been killed in a suicide bomb attack north of the capital, Baghdad.

Police officials say the May 2 attack took place when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden car into the checkpoint near Dujail town. They say the attack also wounded six people.

Dujail is 80 kilometers north of Baghdad.

Violence has surged in Iraq recently.

According to the United Nations, 8,868 people were killed in Iraq last year -- the country's highest death toll since the peak of sectarian bloodletting in 2007 and 2008.
