Flooding Closes Roads, Forces Evacuations In Kazakhstan

ASTANA -- Roads in several parts of Kazakhstan have been closed due to severe floods caused by snowmelt.

The Emergency Situations Committee at Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry said on April 13 that many major and minor roads in the Aqmola, East Kazakhstan, Pavlodar and Qaraghandy regions have been closed.

Hundreds of residents have been evacuated from dozens of towns and villages in the afflicted regions, but no casualties were reported.

A similar situation was reported in the South Kazakhstan region, where roads remain functioning amid reports of floods hitting some towns and villages.

Temperatures in some regions has abruptly risen as high as 26 Celsius in recent days, causing snow to melt quickly.
