Voting is under way in the Republican Party primary in the U.S. southern state of Florida.

Opinion polls released ahead of the vote showed former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney holding a double-digit lead over his main rival, former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum and congressman Ron Paul are also vying for the Republican nomination, but they are both lagging far behind in opinion polls.

The winner in Florida will capture all of the state's 50 delegates to the Republican nominating convention in August.

The Republican nominee will run against President Barack Obama in the general election in November.

In previous contests, Gingrich won the January 21 primary in South Carolina, while Romney was victorious in the earlier New Hampshire primary.
