Former Chief Of Kyrgyz Geology, Mineral Resources Agency Arrested

Uchkun Tashbaev

BISHKEK -- A former chief of Kyrgyzstan's Geology and Mineral Resources Agency, Uchkun Tashbaev, has been arrested on corruption charges.

Kyrgyzstan's State Committee for National Security (UKMK) said on December 3 that Tashbaev was detained on November 30.

Tashbaev has been charged with abuse of office and illegal licensing of mineral-resource exports.

Bishkek’s Birinchi Mai District Court ruled that Tashbaev will be held in pretrial detention until at least January 30.

Investigations have been launched into the illegal export of gold and other mineral resources.

Tashbaev also used to work as Kyrgyzstan's economic development minister.

Before the antigovernment protests in April 2010 that toppled then-President Kurmanbek Bakiev, Tashbaev was a manager at Kyrgyzstan's Central Agency for Development, Investments, and Innovations.
