Authorities in Austria have confirmed that former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader was arrested in that country, hours after Croatian authorities issued an international arrest warrant.
Austrian authorities said he was arrested "in the Salzburg area."
Sanader left Croatia shortly before parliament on December 9 lifted his immunity from prosecution.
Prosecutors say Sanader is suspected of abuse of office during his time as prime minister.
The state-run news agency HINA earlier said Sanader had sent it a text message saying he was on a business trip abroad and would return to Croatia of his own accord.
Sanader led the government and the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) from 2003 until he quit in a surprise announcement in 2009.
