Five French Foreign Legionnaires -- including soldiers from Eastern Europe -- have been killed in an avalanche as they were on a training exercise in the French Alps, local authorities said.
Another six were injured in the avalanche.
The avalanche happened on January 18 in Valfrejus where 51 military personnel were taking part in a ski-training exercise.
A rescue operation was launched for the soldiers.
Authorities said on January 19 that one of the soldiers was French.
They did not identify the nationalities of the others, but one French official said they were from Nepal and Eastern Europe.
The French Foreign Legion is a military service branch of the French Army that is commanded by French officers but recruits soldiers from countries around the world.
Last week two teenagers on a school trip and a Ukrainian tourist were killed in an avalanche in the French Alps.
