Gaza-Based Rocket Attack On Israel Undercuts Unofficial Truce

Israeli military officials say the country's south was hit by a barrage of rockets on the night of August 21-22 which had been launched from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Police say no one was injured in the attacks, which Israel reportedly responded to with an airstrike into Gaza.

The latest outbreak of violence began with an attack on Israelis near the Egypt-Israel border on August 18.

Eight Israelis were killed in the attack which Israel blamed on Gaza-based militants.

Israel retaliated with airstrikes which killed about 15 Palestinians.

Tensions also increased between Israel and Egypt, after Egypt accused Israel of killing five of its security forces while pursuing militants responsible for the attack on August 18 attack near the border.

The rocket fire on August 21-22 came despite reports Gaza-based militants had agreed to an Egypt-brokered ceasefire.
