Ivory Coast's Gbagbo Makes First ICC Appearance

Former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo

Former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo appeared today at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Gbagbo was extradited to the Netherlands last week to face charges including murder and rape committed by his supporters as he attempted to retain power.

The judge said that Gbagbo is to appear again before the court on June 18 to learn whether he will go to trial on charges of crimes against humanity.

Prosecutors say about 3,000 people died in violence by both sides after Gbagbo refused to concede electoral defeat.

President Alassane Ouattara took power in April with the help of French and UN forces.
