Judo Athlete Wins First Gold For Georgia

Zviad Gogotchuri has won gold in the judo competition in Rio, giving Georgia its first-ever gold at the Paralympics.

Gogotchuri, who is blind, beat out Ukraine's Oleksandr Nazarenko on September 11 to claim top honors in the 90-kilogram weight class.

Uzbekistan's Shukhrat Boboev and Dartanyon Crockett of the United States battled it out for bronze in the competition.

Some 4,300 sportsmen and women from 161 countries around the world are participating in the games in Brazil.

The competition was overshadowed before its opening when its world governing body voted to bar Russia's team from competing, due to doping allegations.
