Georgia is to sign a key trade and political pact with the European Union in Brussels on June 27.
European Council President Herman Van Rompuy made the announcement on May 14, following talks with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili in Tbilisi.
In a statement, Van Rompuy described the signing of an Association Agreement with Georgia as an "important milestone."
"By choosing this path, Georgia is signaling its commitment to strong democratic institutions, respect for the rights of its citizens, and firmly upholding the rule of law," he said. "Georgia is a free, democratic country that should make its own choices. No external pressure must change this."
The pact with Georgia was agreed in principle in November at an Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius.
The announcement comes one day after Van Rompuy said that Moldova would also sign an Association Agreement in Brussels on June 27.
