Georgian Lawmakers Scuffle, Exchange Offensive Words

A Georgian parliament session was briefly suspended when a brawl broke out between lawmakers during a debate on whether illegally earned assets should be legalized.

The clash on April 4 involved members of the ruling Georgian Dream political bloc and the opposition United National Movement party.

Tensions in the chamber soared after opposition lawmaker Giorgi Kandelaki mocked Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and suggested the draft law must have been proposed by the ruling Georgian Dream coalition to protect the interests of wealthy former Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili.

A Georgian Dream coalition member, Gela Gelashvili, responded with vulgarities, triggering an exchange of blows.

The session continued after speaker Davit Usupashvili asked the parliament's security service to bring the situation under control.
